Burwood Stud set to Showcase Another Exceptional Draft Yearlings at Nutrien Sunshine Stars Sale
Published on:

Burwood Stud, based in the Darling Downs, is not only Queensland’s but one of Australia’s largest standardbred studs. Established by the hardworking Denning Family, Burwood Stud has been in operation for over 40 years, foaling down more than 150 mares each season.

The stud has earned an impressive reputation for its preparation and presentation of yearlings over the years. Just a few weekends ago, Burwood Stud attended the APG sale held at Ipswich and secured the highly sought after title of the highest priced yearling to go through the ring. They continued the sale strongly, managing to capture the three top prices for both the colts and fillies.

This weekend, Sunday February 23rd, Burwood Stud will present 23 yearlings at the Nutrien Sunshine Stars Yearling Sale, which will be held at The Creek. Brisbane. Among these, seven yearlings are sired by a Cobbitty Equine Farm resident sire.

   – Lot 47 For A Reason x Left In The Wind

For A Reason is one of Australia’s most consistent strike rate sires, and manages to serve over 100 mares each season. It is not often we see many For A Reason yearlings go through the sales ring and when they do, buyers eagerly seize the opportunity to get their hands on them. For A Reason was recently crowned the NSW Breeders Association Sire Of The Year and has been awarded the NSW Sire of the Year on four occasions.

Burwood Stud is showcasing an exceptional colt sired by For A Reason at this weekend’s sale, the only colt at that. Lot 47 is the first foal from the mare Left In The Wind, hailing from the renowned Queensland family of ‘Lefty.’

Noel Denning, founder of Burwood Stud, expressed his admiration for this colt: “An outstanding colt that presents himself exceptionally well. He has an amazing temperament and is a big, strong colt – he looks like a two-year-old already. He will be a fantastic value buy; he may even be the best of the bunch.”

The Denning family will also showcase four McWicked yearlings for themselves and their esteemed clients, GSM Racing.

McWicked holds the title of the richest harness racing stallion in history, winner of over $5 million dollars. During his inaugural season in Australia, McWicked sired 16 individual two-year-old winners, including the Breeders Crown winner for the two-year-old colts and geldings, Mac Bon ($93,820, 1:53.5).

“She is an eye-catching filly that is a very racy type with such strong hindquarters, “Without a doubt, she will be an early two-year-old and comes from an excellent family of winners, consistently producing nice horses.” (Noel Denning).

It is important to note that this filly is fully sustained for the Cobbitty Equine Classic two-year-old race series. This is a chance for buyers to jump onboard and be apart of this new exciting series.

“This guy is a robust, well-developed colt who is not only well-mannered but also eager to work and again from the great producing ‘Ark’ family.” (Noel Denning).

“A very good type that is well grown and developed, her exceptional manners make our job very easy. She also comes from a great producing family of winners from generation after generation.” (Noel Denning).

“This guy is the first foal out of a sister to the dam of last year’s exciting two-year-old Fate Awaits. We are very happy with him, great temperament, a big strong colt that is a great mover.” (Noel Denning).

Also to note that Lot 54 is fully sustained for the Cobbitty Equine Classic.

Burwood Stud and their clients have been keen supporters of our Somebeachsomewhere sire, Huntsville. After topping the first Queensland standardbred yearling sale of the year with a son of Hunstville (Lot 125 out of Petite Paree), they are presenting two Huntsville yearlings, a colt and a filly—who are definitely worth your attention. Both of these lots are also fully sustained for the Cobbitty Equine Classic.

“A much finer type in our draft of colts but in saying that he is a very nice racy type, he is a horse that is very willing to learn and ready for his next step, he oozes athleticism.” (Noel Denning).

“This is an exceptional filly, she is the only Huntsville filly available in the sale. We are quite impressed with her. She is not only very athletic but also strong. She is sure to make an early two-year-old.” (Noel Denning).

We thank Noel for his time to discuss his draft, and we wish the Burwood team, all vendor’s, buyers and the team at Nutrien all the best for the sale this Sunday.
