Check out Mat Day’s exceptional draft this weekend
Published on:

Mat Day has been a significant figure in the breeding industry for over 30 years, during which he has bred and sold numerous high-caliber horses. Based at Goulburn, Mat continues to offer purchasers with not only exceptionally well bred yearlings, but also outstanding looking colts and fillies each year.

This Sunday the 16th of February, Mat and his team will attend the APG Sydney Yearling Sale at the Inglis Warwick Farm complex.  They will present a draft of eleven yearlings, four being sired by Cobbitty Equine Farm resident stallions.

“We often say it, but our drafts continue to improve year after year, and this year’s lineup is particularly impressive,” the NSW breeder proudly asserts.

Mat Day has been a huge supporter of our first season sire King Of Swing, sending numerous mares his way in his first seasons at stud. In this sale, Mat will showcase three exceptional colts by King Of Swing, all from impressive families also.

“Breeding to King Of Swing was an easy decision for us, not only is he from a great family that just keeps producing good horses, but also he is a magnificent type himself whose sure to pass such qualities onto his progeny. He won Group One races as a 2YO all the way till he retired as an aged horse. He was a great going horse, that was sound and has a fastest lifetime mark of 1.47.9 where he sat parked. What else could you expect of any horse, he was a fair dinkem champion.”

“We have no regrets about breeding to King Of Swing; they say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree holds true for the three colts we are bringing to the sales. They are among the smartest horses we have encountered throughout the years, and they possess a certain presence that truly catches the eye. They are an absolute pleasure to have around and they get you out of bed in the morning and we really enjoy working with them.”

Lot 231 King Of Swing x Moto Living Doll Colt

  • Out of a Live Or Die mare that has been an excellent producer of eleven foals, including eight winners and three earners exceeding $100K.

Lot 234 King Of Swing x Northern Courage Colt

  • A Courage Under Fire dam hailing from an outstanding New Zealand family, and a half-sister to the $907K winner, Pembrook Benny NZ.

Lot 241 King Of Swing x Our Little Artist Colt

  • From an Art Major mare that is again from a great producing family.

“Lot 241, another striking King Of Swing colt that is a real stand out for me and probably one of my favourites of the draft. His striking presence and athletic build immediately catches the eye, there’s something about this guy.”

The final colt sired by a Cobbitty Equine Farm stallion, Bettors Wish, certainly made a strong impression and stood out just from his photo, even before looking at its breeding – Lot 239.

Bettors Wish was a new edition to the Cobbitty Equine Farm stallion roster this season and available to breeders via frozen semen. Bettors Wish achieved outstanding results as 2023 United States leading first-crop pacing sire from limited numbers of only 39 live foals. Bettors Wish possesses an impeccable pedigree that we believe really complements well with our Australasian bloodlines. Bettors Wish is a son of the grand sire Bettor’s Delight, we believe that Bettor’s Wish is perfectly suited to Direct Scooter line mares and that cross has been notably successful in the Southern Hemisphere in recent times. Which includes mares by such stallions as Christian Cullen, Mach Three, Courage Under Fire, Somebeachsomewhere and Captaintreacherous.

Lot 239 Bettors Wish x Our Lilly Maloane Colt

  • Could this be the ultimate cross? Our Lilly Maloane is a Christian Cullen mare and from the family of Spankem NZ (Bettors Delight) which is bred on a similar cross.

“This guy is exceptionally smart, watches your every movement and knows his routine, very willing to work,” Day reports.

“We are thoroughly impressed with all four colts, they all have great movement, cover the ground well and are fantastic to work with in any capacity. Each has gone through the sale prep with ease, very willing to learn and have been a pleasure to have around. They are very ready and eager for the next step in their careers.”

We extend our best wishes to Mat and his team for the upcoming sales, we understand the journey that it has taken to get here. We will be watching with eager anticipation, be sure to have a look at Mats draft in this Sunday’s Sale.
