RACE 4: $100,000 SCHWEPPES SPRINT (Group 1):
THEY’VE carried all before them in recent months and tonight two of Menangle’s young stars qualified their charges for a crack at the $1 million Garrards Miracle Mile next weekend.
Jack Callaghan (Spirit Of St Louis) and Cameron Hart (Majestic Cruiser) can now enjoy the week of their lives as they prepare for a crack at our richest sprint next weekend after the pair finished one-two in tonight’s Schweppes Sprint.
Spirit Of St Louis lived up to the form he showed in Victoria with his Country Cup wins in storming home for a four-and-a-half-metre victory over Majestic Cruiser with Like A Wildfire a fast-finishing third, grabbing Expensive Ego right on the post.
The winner rated an astonishing 1:48.2, proving Tabcorp Park Menangle must be the best wet-weather track in this country.
“What an awesome little horse this bloke is,” grinned Callaghan as he brought Spirit Of St Louis back after the five-year-old gelding won what was actually his first Menangle race.
“He has such great high speed and that was just a massive performance.
“We were really cruising all the way and the last 500m he was travelling that well I almost ran over the top of DJ (Darren Binskin on Line Up).
“He has such a great sprint. Hopefully the next seven days until the Miracle Mile will just fly by now; What a horse . . . he’s just in outstanding form.”
