Australian breeders flock to Capt Midnight

Capt Midnight has continued in his fathers footsteps and is proving a highly sought-after Stallion. In his first year downunder he has already received a full book of harness racing mares in Australia. His fertility is exceptional as proven in North America earlier this year with 127 mares in foal from a maximum allowed 140 bred.

When a yearling is sold for $350,000 anywhere in the Harness Racing world, you can be sure it will tick all the boxes in relation to Conformation and Pedigree.

At Harrisburg in 2018, a colt named Capt Midnight found himself in a bidding duel and when the hammer dropped he was off to join the powerful Tony Alagna barn in New Jersey. Alagna of course had trained his sire Captaintreacherous to a $3.148 million career, while the dam of this powerful and stunning colt, It Was Fascination, compiled a record of 1:51.2 and $317,222 in prizemoney. Tony Alagna trained her as well. The fact that the first foal of the dam, Captain Trevor (a full brother to Capt Midnight) was showing some extreme juvenile speed also helped the breeder to his big payday. Captain Trevor in fact won six of his nine starts as a two-year-old and joined that elite group of freshman pacers to take a sub 1:50 record – 1:49.2.

His father Captaintreacherous, is currently the leading sire of money-winning two-year-olds in North America as of the 14th November.

Captaintreacherous is the leading sire of two-year-olds in Australia as of today’s date with average earnings of $19,461 and in New Zealand, with only 25 foals he is fourth on the money-winning sires list but his average earnings per foal of $8,065 places him with Bettor’s Delight who has an average of $8,093 per foal. The next best sire in New Zealand has half as much per foal.

His dominance as a racehorse as well as his astute pedigree has seen many breeders book their best mares to him.

“Not only does his record speak for itself, only being out of the money on three occasions, and pacing two of his last runs in 1:47, his pedigree and pure presence is outstanding. He is one of those horses who immediately takes your eye, and his beautiful nature makes him a pleasure to work with” said Luke McCarthy.

Luke’s brother Andy McCarthy who had the pleasure of driving him ranked him on top of all the two-year-old pacing colts he has driven, stating “once you ask him to go he gives you goosebumps”.

With a looming Stallion career imminent, Capt Midnight was retired with a bank account of $662,286 and a personal best time of 1:47.2.

Cobbitty Equine Farm are very excited with his strong book of mares, which include the brilliant Group 1 millionaire mare Fleur De Lil 1:51.4 ($1,041,636) dam of four winners including Effronte 1:48.6 ($227,169), Forever Gold 1:51.7 ($700,593), Bettor Enforce 1:48.9 ($394,299), Tact Hayleys Delight 1:52.2 ($300,736), Bridget Bluechip 1:51.4 ($177,946), Tralee Bromac 1:50.9 ($230,250), Blackberry Lane 1:53 ($119,827), Dymondee ($110,294), Delightful Tara 1:51.9 ($109,972), She Aint Fakin a full sister to Blacks A Fake ($4,575,438) and Smart As Camm Be ($201,444) just to name a few.
