From his very first start, Mirage Hanover displayed the exceptional speed, acceleration and determination that would carry him to the pinnacle of North American harness racing.

Mirage Hanover assembled an outstanding record of 10 wins, 8 seconds and 4 thirds from just 29 lifetime starts, earning US$950,404 and taking a blistering lifetime mark of 1:46.3.

He finished in the top three in 22 of his 29 appearances, an exceptional 76% strike rate, while competing throughout his career against the strongest colts of his generation. He was a stakes-winning two-year-old, a Breeders Crown Champion at three and a Grand Circuit performer whose greatest weapon was his extraordinary ability to produce devastating closing speed, time after time.

Exceptional From His First Start

There was no waiting for Mirage Hanover to reveal his ability.

In the first start of his life, he finished second in 1:54, recording the same time as the winner after powering home in a remarkable 25.1 final quarter. For an inexperienced two-year-old making his racetrack debut, it was an immediate indication that Mirage Hanover possessed something very few horses are born with – genuine, natural speed.

That potential quickly became performance.

During his freshman campaign he won four of nine starts, earning US$166,563 and taking a two-year-old mark of 1:50.4. His juvenile season included the Nassagaweya Stakes and three Ontario Sires Stakes Gold victories, establishing him among the most talented two-year-olds of his crop.

One of his defining juvenile performances came in an Ontario Sires Stakes Gold event, where he powered clear to win by five lengths in 1:50.4, closing in 26.2. It was a dominant display of speed and superiority, defeating a field that included future North America Cup winner and millionaire Nijinsky.

Bigger, Stronger & Faster At Three

The truly elite horses do not simply show speed at two – they return at three and take another step forward.

Mirage Hanover did exactly that.

In his first start as a three-year-old, he immediately announced his return with victory in 1:49.3, producing yet another brilliant 25.1 final quarter. He defeated a strong field that included established older performer I Did It My Way, showing from the beginning of his sophomore campaign that he was ready to compete at the highest level.

From 20 starts at three, Mirage Hanover recorded six wins, seven seconds and two thirds, earning more than US$783,000 during an exceptional Grand Circuit season. His campaign included victories in the Breeders Crown Final, Breeders Crown Elimination, Tattersalls Pace and Tompkins-Geers Stakes, together with runner-up performances in the Cane Pace, Little Brown Jug Final and Matron Stakes.

A Turn Of Speed Few Horses Possess

Mirage Hanover’s closing speed was not something he produced once under perfect circumstances. It was a defining feature of his entire career.

In a three-year-old Open at The Meadowlands, he drew toward the outside, went straight to the front and controlled the race throughout. Still travelling powerfully at the end of the mile, he exploded home in an almost unheard-of 24.3 final quarter to win in 1:49.1.

A closing quarter of that calibre is extraordinary under any circumstances. To produce it after leading throughout demonstrated not only rare acceleration, but the ability to carry elite speed from the start of a mile to the finish.

He reinforced that performance in the Tompkins-Geers Stakes at The Meadowlands, dominating his rivals by 6½ lengths in 1:49 and again finishing with exceptional speed, this time in 25.4.

These were not isolated flashes of brilliance. Mirage Hanover repeatedly produced official closing quarters in the 25-second range, including:

While Mirage Hanover possessed breathtaking speed, his race record also demonstrated toughness and versatility.

In the Cane Pace, he finished runner-up to world-record performer Legendary Hanover, pacing his own mile in 1:46.4and producing the fastest individual final quarter in the race in 26.3.

His performance in the Little Brown Jug Final was equally impressive. Racing on Delaware’s demanding half-mile track, Mirage Hanover was parked on the outside for the entire mile yet refused to surrender, finishing second to Captain Albano in 1:50.4, with Legendary Hanover behind him in third.

That performance showed another dimension to Mirage Hanover. He was not simply a horse dependent on an easy trip or a fast track. He possessed the courage, stamina and competitive instinct to continue fighting through one of the toughest trips imaginable on one of harness racing’s most demanding stages.

Mirage Hanover’s breathtaking victory in the Tattersalls Pace at The Red Mile stamped him as one of the fastest and most exciting colts of his generation.

Sitting close to the speed before taking command, Mirage Hanover powered away from an outstanding field to win by 3½ lengths in 1:46.3, establishing his lifetime record and becoming the fastest Canadian-sired three-year-old pacer in harness racing history at the time.

The field contained some of the finest colts in North America, yet Mirage Hanover did not simply defeat them – he put clear daylight between himself and his rivals. Legendary Hanover finished sixth, approximately nine lengths behind, as Mirage Hanover delivered one of the strongest performances of his career.

Breeders Crown Champion

Mirage Hanover carried that form directly into the Breeders Crown.

In his elimination, he stopped the clock in 1:48.4, finishing in 25.4 to secure his place in the championship final.

One week later, he produced the defining victory of his career.

In the US$600,000 Breeders Crown Final, Mirage Hanover travelled close to the leaders before being angled into the clear. Once presented with room, he accelerated decisively and powered away to win by 2½ lengths in 1:48, defeating the likes of Nijinsky and Captain Albano with authority.

The performance equalled the stakes record and delivered Mirage Hanover one of North American harness racing’s most coveted championships.
